Southwest Airlines and JetBlue have a new home at San Francisco International Airport (SFO). Last week, gates at the long-awaited B wing of Terminal 1 finally opened for business.
San Francisco’s newly refurbished terminal is now named after Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician to serve in the United States. Milk served as a city supervisor from 1977 to 1978 until he and the mayor were assassinated by a disgruntled former colleague. Though his tenure was brief, Milk’s memory persists as a symbol of progress in politics within the LGBTQ community.
Last week’s opening marks only the first phase of a much larger project underway at Terminal 1 in San Francisco International Airport. With phase 1 of the construction complete, only 9 gates are officially open. By March of 2020, an additional 9 gates should be operational. In 2021, a connector to the international terminal as well as an additional 7 gates should be open while only in 2023 will the full terminal be operational.
