El Rio
A mixed bar but you can tell the love is for the gays here. The back patio space brings many types to chill out with the burdens of any particular scene.
Churchill
This mixed bar brings class and an interesting beer selection to the edge of the Castro. It’s a great place to bring your straight and gay friends together.
Blackbird
Bringing a welcome dose of decorum to the Castro, Blackbird serves up great cocktails and beer in an environment that won’t scare off your straight friends.
Badlands
A San Francisco icon, this video dance bar is popular and a must stop (if only to say you’ve been). It’s trashy, but sometimes that’s what you need.
Aunt Charlie’s
Divey and seedy, Aunt Charlie harkens back to a different time in SF. It’s still a great place from trans and everyone else to enjoy an unpretentious drink.
440 Castro
It used to be called Daddy’s, but it’s the same scene—taste of Folsom in the Castro. This bar slants towards a more mature leather and levis crowd.
Wild Side West
Lesbians have a cool little spot that makes the gays jealous. The women are there to drink and have fun, and they accomplish both like champs.
Underground SF
This Haight Ashbury bar goes gay a couple days of the month, but hasn’t been able to recreate nights it once had. Now it’s mostly a dive.
Twin Peaks Tavern
Not so affectionately nicknamed the “Glass Coffin” by the younger set, yes this bar caters to an older, quieter crowd at this famous intersection.
Truck
This bar has a great mix of guys, with an extra helping of hunks. They serve great food, though you get the feeling a porn shoot could break out at any moment.
