38th Frameline Festival Features LGBT Indian Films

Frameline 38, the film festival organized by the nation’s leadingLGBT media arts nonprofit organization, will feature three films from South Asian filmmakers at its latest edition, to be held in venues in San Francisco and other Bay Area cities from June 19-29.

“Purple Skies: Voices of Indian Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transmen,” a new documentary from Indian filmmaker Sridhar Rangayan, will screen June 21 at the Roxie Theater in San Francisco.

Rangayan introduces viewers to the unstinting work of organizations that have sheltered and advocated for lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender people. The documentary also captures the joy of local LGBT Indians as they react to the repeal of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalizes same-sex behavior; and their rage at the Supreme Court’s subsequent reinstatement of the law.
