Since 1994, October has been observed as LGBT History Month in the United States. Launched by Rodney Wilson, a high school teacher in Missouri, the celebration promotes understanding of the contributions that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have made to our society. As gay historian George Chauncey of Yale University points out, “LGBT History Month sends an important message to our nation’s teachers, school boards, community leaders and youth about the vital importance of recognizing and exploring the role of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in American history.
