New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Rep. Jerrold Nadler expressed support for the LGBT community on Sunday with an announcement of a proposal to mark Stonewall Inn as the first national park to honor the community’s history.
The legislators introduced their campaign alongside officials and members of the National Parks Conservation Association outside of the Greenwich Village tavern on Christopher Street. The Stonewall Inn was the setting in June 1969 of riots that are regarded as a landmark in the gay rights movement.
