New nightspots are popping up in Palm Springs

Not all of the nightspots in Palm Springs are a throwback to the 1970s, ‘60s or ‘50s.

At least one bar takes us to the speakeasy days of the 1920s, someplace in New Orleans.

Hester was recently opened by Gabriela Olivia, who has also brought us the tasty and hugely cute little restaurant Farm tucked back somewhere behind the La Plaza shopping area in downtown. (Finding it is half the fun.)

At Hester, located at 188 S. Indian Canyon Drive, next door to the Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs, the tinkly chandeliers are dim, the sofa is comfortable and the drinks are strong — even the ice is “hand-chipped.” So don’t be surprised when you hear the smokey molasses voice of Billie Holiday or something live and more real time like The WRK Experience, a blues trio from Los Angeles that has played with Spencer Davis, Edgar Winter and Joe Walsh.
