Los Angeles is a world-class city for gay sports—with over a dozen leagues in games as varied as kickball and rugby, a healthy love of competition and a community that adores fitness and the outdoors, our town’s sports fever makes perfect sense. But as Ray Robles, the President of the Los Angeles Volleyball Organization says, “It doesn’t seem a lot of these leagues and players get to mingle.”
There are a lot of men and women heading out to play with their friends, but most of the gay leagues in L.A. seem disconnected—and as a result, the vibrancy and breadth of the gay sports scene is hard to grasp. Just exactly how big is it, and what kind of people are serious about their sports?
