West Wing your way to Washington DC for a power break with history and grand sights

The Capitol of Washington - Pennsylvania AvenueWhen most people plan a visit to America’s East Coast, they imagine the bright lights and skyscrapers of New York City – the kind of place where you feel you’re on a movie set.

Washington DC may not have New York’s towering skyline but it’s got just as much star quality.

It’s a city steeped in rich and dramatic history, where you’ll find grand sights around every corner and restaurants to suit every taste.

I flew to DC with US airline United, which recently launched daily trips to Washington’s Dulles airport from Manchester. Its friendly staff, great range of in-flight entertainment and a perfectly good mid-air meal took the sting out of the eight-hour trip.
