Hunty! This is the weekend for Los Angeles to be covered in highlighter and topped with the most fabulous wigs. It’s RuPaul’s DragCon!
RuPaul’s signature event comes to LA this Friday through Sunday, May 11–13, 2018, and draws crowds that are excited to contour the hell out of their cheeks, meet the drag queens of their dreams or just spill the tea with the fiercest queens in the country.
However, If the shady ladies of RuPaul’s Drag Race (ah-hmm Trixie Mattel, BenDeLaCreme, Alaska 5000 and BeBe Zahara Benet) are just too much for you to handle or you’re just are not ready to lip-synch for your life we suggest you sashay your way through the city.
Here are some of the neatest ways to get a good dose of LA:
Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood is the center of it all. Bars, restaurants, and shopping — you really can’t go wrong with watching the parade of hotties march down the street.
When the sun starts to set, the obligatory stops at the hot nightclubs are The Abbey, LA’s mega-club to get your dance on or Micky’s where the boys can be hot and the nights can be hotter as the shirts come off and the tunes get thumping.
If you’re staying in WeHo, make sure you head to Pink’s Hot Dog for late night grub to soak up some of the libations. This iconic LA spot names some of their dogs after celebs and tops them with some of the more creative ingredients. It is Hollywood glam meets mid-century diner.
If you’re too snatched from DragCon and want a slower speed, Silverlake is considered the other gay area that brags about a chiller atmosphere and even more galleries and bars to spend a whole day or two. A few neighborhoods over from West Hollywood, this sleepy hood is home to the Eagle LA and Faultline for the leather crowd and Akbar for a more hipster feel.
A trip to the coast wouldn’t be complete without some beach time. Even if it’s not your first time, we love rediscovering Santa Monica pier all over again. After spending some time digging the families and strollers, remember to pack your swimsuit to hit the beach and catch those SoCal rays.
Although if you really want to get outside, hike into Runyon Canyon. The 160-acre park is a great way to burn off the calories from a night of drinking or ensure you are in tip-top shape to fit into that bod conscious number for DragCon. A half-day hike is a great way to find inner peace while spotting some half-naked locals. Just make sure you remove all make-up since a smudged mascara is not cute in the selfie at Inspiration Point.
One more way to get in a good health session is to head up to the Griffith Observatory, the city’s iconic gateway to the cosmos. You’ll catch a chance to stare at the stars (in the sky, not in the movies) and get in some education with a full day at this planetarium. The art deco building is a well-preserved relic and not only affords stunning vies of the city, but you can score primo shots at the Hollywood sign that is just as iconic.
Whatever you decide to do this weekend, remember, don’t f*ck it up. Can we get an Amen?
